Pompeii and Herculaneum Part 2

Trying to finish up this major historical adventure has proven to be difficult but I will do it!

Herculaneum, Pompeii's little sister was not as impressive as Pompeii but yet still very worthy of my time.  It was "caked and baked" by the same volcano, however unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was spared at first and then 12 hours after the eruption was slammed with an avalanche of superheated ash and hot gas.

The first area visited was the Seat of the Augustali which is decorated with frescos of Hercules and was a forum for freed slaves trying to work their was back into the Roman society.

Another fast food joint!  This one was a little different, not as many countertops.

While walking through the area of many shops you can see ancient bits of wood charred.

This was the Bottega ad Cusumas, the wine shop, and the sign is still legible and along the bottom, the word NOLA was written in red.  This was an advertisement for a show and would have been replaced with something new just as the show ended.

I visited the House of Neptune and Amphitrite.  You can see an intact 2nd floor.

Located in the gymnasium was a bronze fountain, Hydra of Lerna.  The features a seven headed monster that was defeated by Hercules as one of his 12 labors.

Other pictures from Herculaneum including baths, what was Herculaneum beac (the grassy picture), boat storage with bodies of those that tried to escape via the sea and were pushed into the storage areas and much more.
